I feel that gardens are evolving. The process of creating a garden starts with careful thought and follows with the placement of plants in their new environment. After the garden is installed, you will want to keep an eye on it, to observe and maintain it. Initially, you will be more concerned about how everything adapts to its new home and keeping down the weeds. The majority of problems that occur during the first year are due to watering too little or too much. As your garden starts to mature, you will notice that micro-climates begin to develop, and your focus will begin to shift from how everything adapts to what is working well and what is not, as well as making adjustments based on observation of the environment. The biggest key in maintaining a successful garden design is to properly mulch, weed, water, deadhead, prune and perform seasonal cleanups. My goal in designing gardens is to create an atmosphere that provides a nurturing environment for the soul and a calm mind through the aesthetics and serenity of the garden. In order to achieve this beauty, I use color, texture, structure, and scale in juxtaposition to one another. Some of the results I enjoy most are accidental—attracting wildlife such as hummingbirds and bees, having unexpected color combinations of plants, and hearing sounds you did not expect, such as rustling leaves. Frederick Law Olmsted, the founder of landscape architecture, recognized the impact gardens have on the mind and soul when he stated, "Nature enhances mindfulness."
