About Rooftop Roots

Rooftop Roots is a Landscape Construction professional based in Dc, D.C., serving DC, Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Falls Church.

Rooftop Roots, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, strives to create a more equitable, sustainable and just future through the development of a new approach to how we interact with our urban ecosystems. We develop, install and maintain Urban Gardens for both residential and commercial purposes, creating healthy, green spaces that promote healthy eating, provide jobs and support underserved communities throughout the District of Columbia. Proceeds from our Urban Gardens will fund our Nutrition/Sustainability Programs, and provide for the continued operation of Urban Gardens within the Underserved Community. Our organisation's mission is built upon the principles of: 1) Providing Low Income and Underserved Communities with access to Locally Grown Fruits and Vegetables; 2) Re-defining Urban and Suburban Landscapes to Encourage Biodiversity, Soil Health and Water Quality; 3) Providing Green-Collar Job Opportunities to Unemployed and Underemployed Members of the Community.

We provide our landscape support services to all areas of Washington DC and several nearby communities. Our mission is to promote sustainability by providing horticultural services to underserved areas; therefore, we provide services to as many neighbourhoods within our service area as possible. A wide variety of qualifications and experience have been acquired by Rooftop Roots' landscapers that support the delivery of quality service to our clients. Most of our landscape professionals possess formal education (Horticulture, Landscape Design or Environmental Sciences) which provides a sound foundation to what we do. Rooftop Roots believes strongly in hands-on experience and all of our landscape professionals have had a number of experiences on a range of projects, including residential or commercial gardens. Rooftop Roots also recognizes the importance of involvement with the communities we serve, as well as creating jobs for un-and underemployed people, through training and support services. Rooftop Roots combines our knowledge and experience with our commitment to sustainability.

To create and create a garden, the first step is to have a meeting with the customer to discover their vision, style and the site. We will evaluate the health of the soil, sun exposure, and the plants already growing or to be planted on this first visit to the property. Once we receive this information we will develop a custom designed garden that will satisfy the requirement of the client, whether it is a vegetable or edible garden, native landscape, or just a beautiful outdoor space. When the customer approves of the garden design, we will begin work on installing it, this will include soil preparation, planting, and irrigation installation. In addition, we emphasize the need for ongoing maintenance to continue the health and well-being of the garden over time. Rooftop Roots incorporates sustainable methods into every aspect of our business in order to support our mission of cultivating and supporting the development of healthy, green spaces within communities.
