This crisp texture and mild, sweet, turnip-like flavor makes it an interesting addition to stews and casseroles. It is also enjoyed raw as part of a relish tray. The edible portion is a large bulb produced on a stem above the ground. Grows well in containers. Select sunny location and sow seed as soon as soil can be worked and continue to sow at two week intervals until 4 weeks before fall frost. Cultivate soil and enrich with vegetable food. Firm soil over seed. Keep soil moist, clean, and feed every 4 weeks. Pick or pull before they mature (2 to 2-1/2 in./5-6 cm.).
