A member of the mustard family, Arugula is also known as rocket, roquette and rucola, this herb is slightly bitter, peppery and aromatic. Arugula is cold tolerant and used in salads and sauces or may be steamed as a vegetable. Sow seed in thick rows of moist rich soil. A light shade garden area is best. Spring plantings are the most desirable - avoid summer plantings. Keep well-drained. Keep soil weed free and moist, but not soggy. Tender leaves are ready for harvesting in six to eight weeks or entire plants may be cut 2-3 inches above the soil line (leave the central leaf buds for additional growth).
