The objective of the renovation was to improve the curb appeal of the front yard while providing a sustainable solution using native plants. We began with an entire evaluation of the existing landscape, which included old, dysfunctional shrubs and no clear design identity. Our intended goal was to upgrade the space within budget and constrained time frame. We worked with native plants that would flourish in this environment, providing attractive but lower maintenance plants with ecological balance. A colorful collection of flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, and evergreen shrubs with year-round interest was installed. To improve the approach into the home, a whimsical flagstone path was constructed and surrounded with plantings that helped to lead incoming visitors to the front door. Reclaimed stones were used for edging, and this helped with increased erosion control while also contributing character to the overall design. Finally, we incorporated a new, energy-efficient irrigation system that would support the plant health while using an allotment of water. In the end, our team was well-acquainted with the client's pleased reactions and comments of satisfaction of the new front yard! The color and textures of plants provided appropriate elevation complements. The previously drab landscape was transformed into an environmentally-friendly colorful space to enjoy from the front porch. The client also mentioned that their neighbors had stopped in to praise their new front yard design! Equally as exciting, the native plant selection was attracting insects while increasing animal activity, biodiversity levels, and wildlife habitat.
