The focus of this residential landscaping was to completely redesign the front and back yards to implement sustainability in design but also in plant selection, giving it an aesthetic appeal. Key features of the design included the installation of a native plant garden that promotes biodiversity and is designed to thrive with little maintenance. We incorporated native perennials, shrubs, and trees such as Eastern Redbud and Black-eyed Susans. The native plants offer color all season while attracting local pollinators. There were many challenges, including the site’s sloped nature, necessitating grading and terraced garden beds. As a whole , we chose to build retaining walls that use natural stone and reclaimed wood. With functional and attractive retaining walls, we developed attractive focal points, while stabilizing the landscape. For the hardscaping, we used permeable pavers for the patio area to alleviate stormwater runoff and drain properly. This consideration was built on our initiatives for sustainable landscaping, taking stormwater drainage into consideration, and restoring water back into the soil instead of creating a flooding issue. The finish product was a landscape that was to balance lush plantings and hard sciences and gave the homeowners a visually appealing outdoor living space. They expressed how much they love the new landscape, and how it gives curb appeal to their property, but invokes a gathering space for their families and relaxing enjoyment.
