About This Project

Chapman Arms, Cambridge, MA Kimberly Mercurio Landscape Architecture is pleased to present the Chapman Arms , which is a redesigned landscape for a building located in Cambridge, MA. The fulfills functional needs, improves the exterior of a historic building, and incorporates a modern design aesthetic. The involved a complete re-design of the landscape to replace existing plantings with native New England flora. We selected a palette of perennial flowers, ornamental grasses, and shrubs to create a beautiful and colorful landscape throughout the growing season. High-quality stone was used for the pathways and seating areas to tie into the architecture of Chapman Arms and promote durability and ease of maintenance. One of the many challenges associated with the was entitlement and design on a site with difficult grading and access. To ensure adequate drainage and accessibility, our team developed creative contours to the landscape that established tiered garden beds while enhancing aesthetics, soil health, and water holding capacity. The final product is a tranquil and inviting outdoor space that supports community interactions and paths for relaxation. Residents will enjoy paver seating areas with shade from trees chosen for their size and form, as well as vibrant pollinator gardens. Overall, the aesthetic has been improved, as well as the property’s value and resident satisfaction. We are proud of the quality and detail that went into this and are proud to have contributed to the improvement of the Cambridge landscape.
