About This Project

Audubon Certified Backyard Habitat The Figure Ground Studio, LLC completed the ‘Audubon Certified Backyard Habitat’ in Cold Spring, NY: a synthesis of appropriate aesthetics, sustainability, and ecological stewardship. We took on the task of converting a current, conventional backyard into a living landscape that not only beautifies the property but contributes to the local wildlife. Beginning with a site analysis to discover native flora that would thrive in the climate, we proposed the planting of various, interesting native plants, including butterfly bush, coneflower, and milkweed. All of which were selected to attract pollinators and provide sustenance for local birds. To reduce runoff, improve soil quality, mitigate the amount of work required to maintain the landscape, and to have a year-round landscape, we used organic mulch and permeable pavers. One of the challenges we worked within was the varied terrain of the property. We addressed this by developing terraced planning beds which not only provided a focal point in the landscape but improved drainage throughout the space. Our team constructed a naturalistic pond with native aquatic plants, which effectively attracts wildlife and offers visual serenity to the environment. The end product is a stunning pocket habitat that excites the client while welcoming wildlife of birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The calculated selection of materials, exists locally sourced stone and reclaimed timber, undoubtedly illustrates the intention of sustainability. The backyard has now become a certified Audubon habitat, representing our immense responsibility to create a landscape that marries beauty and ecological stewardship. The Figure Ground Studio, LLC is pleased to deliver a that meets not only the aesthetics desired by our client, but intentionally has made an impact on the surrounding environment. The environment has now been transformed into a flourishing retreat, where nature and beauty coexist seamlessly.
