A "Loose Formal" Landscape by Twig Landscape Design, LLC At Twig Landscape Design, LLC we are passionate bringing outdoor spaces to life through landscape design that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional for the particular property it enhances. Our recently completed , "A Loose Formal Landscape," located in the historic and vibrant neighborhood of Oak Park, is a great example of a quality landscape that speaks to innovation and ingenuity of design. This is a unique expression of formal structure combined with a relaxed, carefree, yet, aesthetically pleasing garden retreat. The client's preference was for a landscape that would complement their vintage home and, at the same time, modern appointments to the home. The design team considered the roofline of the home and developed a plan that included a combination of circular symmetrical plantings with structured free-flowing beds. This landscape really achieved a wonderful balance of organized structure and relaxing garden feel. We incorporated a variety of quality materials such as locally harvested river stone for the paths that would offer an authentic, natural landscape that durability would last. We also selected a variety of native plants including ornamental grasses, perennials, flowering shrubs to create a sustainable environment for long-term enjoyment in addition to seasonal interest. To contribute to the "loose formal" theme, we were able to define space and add structure with evergreen hedges. The placement of the evergreen hedges creates a structure that is pleasing to the eye and inviting without feeling too rigid. A key challenge we faced was the site's uneven topography. Being sensitive to that and to the budget of the , we devised a solution of created terraced planting beds. This site solution would allow us to maximize drainage issues but also serve as a visual presentation in the landscape. Tied to the terraces the team designed a stunning stone water feature that we were able to custom build with a gentle trickling appearance to soften the recent built environment. The client was thrilled to have their own piece of paradise in their back yard. The very landscape that allowed for a separation from their total building footprint and outdoor entertaining. The mixture of structured plantings, and natural elements provide a beautiful backdrop for his family to entertain and enjoy relaxation with each other.
