Driveway with Historic Preservation Intent At Twig Landscape Design, LLC, we have an affinity for fusing modern function with timeless beauty in our work, as seen in this month’s . Our "Driveway with Historic Preservation Intent" took place in Oak Park in a home built in the early 1900s. The objective was to create a functional driveway that has a visual aesthetic that is cohesive with the architecture and historic nature of the home. Also, the would demonstrate the use of sustainable practices in the landscape. We began the with a comprehensive site analysis. We wanted to ensure that our team understood the characteristics of the site and the architectural and historical context of the surrounding area. We choose to use permeable pavers made from reclaimed bricks, which aesthetically keep with the vintage context of the home and environmentally based because the permeable pavers will filter water through them to reduce runoff and help recharge groundwater. One of the 's challenges was to integrate the new driveway into the existing landscape with the sizeable trees and established gardens. We achieved this goal strategically through grading to create drainage without damaging the existing root system of the trees and shrubbery. Our team also designed a native planting scheme along the edges of the driveway to enhance the visual appeal of the space, but also to create ecological value in the landscape. The outcome of the is a beautiful driveway that reflects the historical character of the home, while providing and functioning with the needs of a modern driveway, attention to sustainability, and proper aesthetics of the home and neighborhood. The driveway uses reclaimed materials in the , thoughtful design, and custom attention to detail to give the homeowner a beautiful and cohesive entryway into their home and neighborhood that reflects the nature of the late 19th/early 20th century.
