The East Michigan Avenue Loft project transforms a historic building in downtown Kalamazoo into four modern residential units, merging contemporary design with the charm of a storied structure. Having served as a local business for decades, the upper two levels of the building became available for residential development, prompting InForm Architecture to design a solution that honors the unique characteristics of the space while catering to modern living needs. The building, partially demolished by a tornado in 1980, has been skillfully modified and rebuilt with modern materials, providing an intriguing foundation for this loft conversion. The design emphasizes the building's structural elements, utilizing steel and concrete floor plates that not only enhance durability but also significantly minimize sound transmission between units—an essential feature for urban living. The existing elevator facilitates easy access to all floors, ensuring convenience for residents and enhancing the overall functionality of the layout. In creating the four loft units, the design team opted for an open-concept approach that showcases the original floor and roof structures, incorporating diamond-polished concrete floors that reflect a contemporary aesthetic while paying homage to the building's industrial past. Natural light floods the living spaces through expansive windows, creating an inviting ambiance that complements the sleek, modern finishes throughout.
