Garrison Boardwalk - Landscape Architect Brian Higley Set on the scenic shores of Midcoast Maine, the Garrison Wood Boardwalk is a cutting-edge piece of landscape architecture woven into the fabric of the site. For the city of Garrison, this waterfront space was futuristic and gained functionality and aesthetic appeal from the professional eye of a seasoned Landscape Architect, Brian Higley. The includes a carefully envisioned boardwalk that softly winds its way across a lively landscape, linking the locals and tourists with the views of the adjacent waterfront scene. Besides harmonizing with the environmentally-friendly surroundings, the boardwalk is built using cedar, which is resilient against the harsh coastal elements. In order for everyone to be able to enjoy the tranquil views, Higley added gentle ramps and strategically placed seating areas to improve accessibility. A major aspect of this was saving the native plants while still keeping the boardwalk from falling into the marsh. Brian's expertise in native species allowed us to integrate native vegetation that thrives in coastal conditions, which included beach grasses and flowering perennials. However, this strengthens up the soil and at the same time, it becomes home for the local wildlife providing a lively eco-domain for the people in the locality. The end product of the Garrison Boardwalk is at once a welcoming and communal space that compliments the natural environment. Elevated with ambient lightings along with benches, the not only provides a space for people to walk among nature but serves also as a platform to hold community activities, as well as nature education activities. Brian Higley was lauded for not just attention to detail but the quality of the carpentry, along with creating a balance between functionality and beauty, and the client was happy with the results as well. Today, the Garrison Boardwalk stands a beloved signature landmark sustaining a sense of place in support of a Midcoast Maine community that embraces natural beauty.
