Balboa Park Craftsman Administered by Juniper Landscape Company, the ‘Balboa Park Craftsman’ is an incredible demonstration of art and function, showcasing what is possible in Southern California landscaping. Located in the heart of San Diego, we were tasked with enhancing the aesthetic impact of the natural environment near Balboa Park while embodying the Craftsman architecture of the existing home. The landscape includes curated native plant gardens that thrive in the local climate and attract various pollinators. We created a beautiful aesthetic by selecting drought-tolerant plants, such as California poppies, agave, and succulents, which required minimal maintenance. We built the landscape to mirror the aesthetic impact of the plants by adding pathways made of natural stone and a rustic flagstone patio as the focal point of the landscape. This stone was sourced locally, demonstrating sustainability goals and respecting the environment around the location. A major challenge we faced in this was the natural terrain and extremely rocky soil found everywhere in this area. Our skilled landscape laborers expertly leveled the grounds properly to create a functional site, but they also built an elaborate drainage system to alleviate water pooling, which would ensure longevity and proper health of the plantings. We also incorporated custom built raised planting beds for growing vegetables and plantings, which contained built charm, depth, and dimension throughout the overall . Overall, the ‘Balboa Park Craftsman’ showcases a simple yet beautiful outdoor oasis that reflects the home’s architecture. The client was delighted, telling us that the landscaping completely enhanced their outdoor living area and they felt more connected with nature.
