With its complex topography and the need to work around existing vegetation, the site posed a series of unique challenges our team needed to assess. We chose low water native plants like California lilac and manzanita to create a sustainable, low maintenance garden that also highlights the natural beauty of the region. To maintain that synergy with the farmhouse architecture, rustic materials reclaimed wood, cobbled stones for raised garden beds, as well as locally sourced stone for pathways and seating areas were included. This has a feature which really made this stand out, being the beautiful outdoor entertainment area with a custom built pergola that will keep the family in comfort from the sun. In addition to providing a pleasant sound, the inclusion of an ornamental water feature also draws people further into the landscape as there is now a feature to visit. One hurdle we had to work through was drainage and avoiding pooling in large storms, which got us to install a French drain that protects both the landscape and the foundation of the farmhouse. What it produced was an interplay of form and function and riot of flowering shrubs, beckoning walks, tranquil sitting spaces, and reflection of the love for landscaping as environmental engineering. The results impressed the client impressed with the weather resistant material choice and quality craftsmanship brought a beautiful landscaping that added into the value of their home while giving quality to their life.
