About This Project

The Sunset Overlook project represents a transformative remodeling of a dark, claustrophobic 1970s spec house into a luminous sanctuary that embraces the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The design philosophy centered around opening the interior spaces to the surrounding natural beauty, creating an inviting atmosphere that harmonizes with its coastal environment. Upon entering, guests are welcomed by a dramatic, sky-lit gallery that serves as a prelude to the step-down great room, where expansive windows frame unparalleled views of the Farallon Islands. Central to this remodel is the innovative use of materials and design elements that enhance both functionality and aesthetics. A grated steel and aluminum bridge, strategically placed above, allows soft, diffused light to filter into the master bedroom suite while providing a seamless connection to the children’s bedroom wing. This bridge not only serves a practical purpose but also adds a sculptural quality to the home, inviting exploration and interaction between spaces. Adjacent to the great room, a thoughtfully designed outdoor courtyard emerges as a serene retreat for the study, doubling as a protected play area suitable for children, regardless of the weather. This outdoor space is an extension of the home, encouraging outdoor living and connection with nature. The addition of a three-story, cantilevered glass bay at the rear of the house accentuates the panoramic views, with mitered glass edges that dematerialize the boundary between indoor and outdoor environments. This design choice imparts a spectacular aerial perspective, inviting the beauty of the landscape into everyday life. Throughout the Sunset Overlook remodel, craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in every aspect, from the selection of high-quality materials to the precision of the construction techniques employed. The completed project embodies a harmonious blend of contemporary design and coastal living, offering an inspiring example of how thoughtful renovation can elevate a home while embracing its natural surroundings.
