About This Project

City Rooftop Vegetable Garden Innovation and sustainability at its finest, this City Rooftop Vegetable Garden was brought to life by Hanselman Landscape and Gardens. Created on the roof of an urban building, this garden makes an unproductive and under utilized area a lively green space. The consists in the creation of long-lasting cedar wood, eco-friendly raised beds. Soil was picked that was organic and high grade so that vegetables heirloom tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and aromatic herbs has the right conditions to grow, ideally on the roof. They employed vertical gardening techniques to maximize space as well as efficiency and used trellises in wall-mounted planters that save space, taking up very little room while adding visual interest. There are several challenges we had such as being surrounded by other buildings which means we don't get as much sun. To combat this, we were sure to orient the beds to take advantage of the best sun aspects while also integrating reflective materials to help disperse light more evenly throughout the system. A well-planned irrigation system was also put in place, maintaining moisture levels using both rainwater collection and drip lines to maintain a sustainable environment. The end product is a high-rise vegetable garden that not only pleases the client but also functions as a green oasis in the city. The client loved the colourful crop and the biodiversity boost to the local ecology of the garden. This was a true city endeavor, a carefully nuanced balance of quality, craftsmanship and urban ecological stewardship and we just had to built it, for our new Client, Hanselman Landscape and Gardens.
