Butterfly Plantings | North Star Landscape Design & Installation Tucked away in the Michiana area, North Star Landscape Design & Installation worked on their 'Butterfly Plantings' to change a boring yard into a pollinator paradise where the homeowners and pollinators can thrive. Covering the scenic areas of Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg, and more, our team was excited to meet the landscape challenge of developing a colorful, eco-friendly environment that appeals to butterflies and works well in the context of the surrounding area. We began the with extensive site studies to find optimal sun, soil and other plants. We chose native plants that are known for their attractiveness to regional butterfly species, such as milkweed, coneflowers, and asters. Such plants both help biodiversity and are easy care, so the garden thrives for years. Incorporating natural materials was paramount. For the plant beds, we chose local stone borders that add a rustic quality to the overall look, beautifully matching the home style. Crushed granite, laid out along a winding course, fabricates access to stroll through the lush planting and animated atmosphere of the garden. The biggest problem we had though was dealing with all the drainage problems in the yard that already existed. We executed a rain garden to soak up the excess water, creating an ecosystem flourishing with plants and butterflies. Not only did it solve a drainage problem, but it also added another level of beauty to the landscape. Thus, our hard work paid off, resulting in an impressive garden that ticks all the boxes when it comes to the eyes and ears, offering a shelter for butterflies. The client was very pleased with the final product, a beautiful, alive, working landscape that improves the curb appeal of the property while supporting the local ecology.
