This was designed to fulfill the client's aesthetic wishes and use of space, while responsibly increasing the property's curb appeal. This , however, centered around a landscape that balances a beautiful use of natural materials with a modern clean design. The was approached by first observing the existing conditions, and recognizing what the challenges might be (e.g. contoured landscape, not enough sun, etc.). The team considered all these challenges, and had all sorts of ideas, including a tiered planting approach that will improve drainage and improve visual interest. The design featured an amazing assortment of native plants and some select ornamental shrubs, carefully chosen based on their resistibility to the local climate. Adding some vigorous perennials (like Cone Flowers, Daylilies, etc.) in several locations to create additional seasonal color, along with a few evergreens to give the garden continued structure in the winter. Eventually, we installed a durable but beautiful stone path made from locally sourced bluestone to direct guests through the garden, while increasing accessibility. In addition to the lush planting, we also included a custom dredged, natural stone retaining wall that adds structural support while also serving as an appealing aesthetic backdrop to the flower bed off to the side. This wall was a significant aspect of overcoming the challenges of the sloping yard, while remaining visually relevant to the surrounding environment.
