The Gregory House, located in Wilmette, Illinois, is a remarkable testament to the intersection of horticultural passion and contemporary design. Spanning 2,100 square feet, this residence was meticulously crafted over a four-year search for the perfect site that would accommodate the clients' dedication to gardening. The architectural design reflects their love for nature, featuring an impressive 29-foot expanse of glass on the south-facing facade, which seamlessly connects the interior spaces with the lush back garden. This expansive glazing not only floods the living areas with natural light but also serves as a visual gateway to the vibrant outdoor landscape. To enhance the gardening experience and ensure optimal growing conditions, the design incorporates a roof extension that protects the glass wall from harsh summer sunlight while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties year-round. This thoughtful approach allows the interior of the house to open generously towards the rear yard, fostering a harmonious relationship between indoor and outdoor living. The positioning of the garage towards the street was a strategic decision, cleverly camouflaging its volume through an extended wall that creates an inviting entrance to an outdoor room. This design choice expands the perceived scale of the home, further blurring the lines between constructed space and nature.
