The Modernized Cabin in Cheverly is a stunning transformation of a charming 1940s structure located in a picturesque DC suburb. This project adeptly enhances the cabin's inherent character while introducing light and contemporary conveniences. The design focused on maximizing the potential of the site, utilizing a level entry through a back alley to facilitate single-level living, which is particularly appealing for accessibility and ease of movement. A key aspect of the renovation involved relocating the kitchen to create a brighter, more functional space. The design integrates the original ceiling into the new kitchen, maintaining a connection to the cabin's history while introducing modern finishes. Bright colors and white cabinetry were selected to contrast the preserved wood paneling and floors in the adjacent living room, resulting in a refreshing and cohesive aesthetic. The centerpiece of this kitchen is an elegant island featuring a prep sink, complemented by artistic custom pendant lights that were thoughtfully sourced by the homeowner. The expansion of the full bathroom was another significant element of the project. A zero-entry shower was installed, providing a luxurious and accessible bathing experience, while ample storage solutions were incorporated to enhance functionality. The renovation also saw the transformation of the original jalousie window sunroom into a versatile home office that serves as an additional main-level bedroom, effectively increasing the cabin's livable space. In addition, the original kitchen door has been repurposed to connect seamlessly to a new laundry/mudroom off the side of the home, enhancing the overall flow and utility of the cabin. This project not only modernizes the living experience but also preserves the unique charm that defines this historic residence.
