Costa Mesa Drought Tolerant Landscaping The 'Costa Mesa Drought Tolerant' by Lydia Monroe of City Green OC reimagined their outdoor living space around eco-friendly building practices. This landscape renovation central to Costa Mesa needed not only to be beautiful, but also water wise. It's a Mediterranean landscape of coastal sage scrub with drought-tolerant native California plants including agave, lavender, and ornamental grasses. Permeable pavers, lined pathways designed to allow water to permeate the surface and enter the ground beneath, were another approach used to improve these garden areas, as they help to direct traffic but also encourage water infiltration to minimize runoff. The site also presented a topography upon which hardscape had already been built out; thus, a key challenge of this was addressing the level changes in a way that responded powerfully to the physical conditions of the property. The City Green OC team set the site up with graceful terracing and thoughtful boulders for aesthetics, drainage, and accessibility. This process leads to a low maintenance well planted garden that has changed a part ofthe clients existing outdoors into a beautiful retreat. Edging and decorative features are made from recycled materials, echoing the sustainability message of the . The customer was very happy with the result and compliments the perfect combination of beauty and functionality.
