Mosler Lofts Landscaping by Kenneth Philp Landscape Architects Situated within the energetic marketplace of Seattle, the Mosler Lofts is representative of the work the team at Kenneth Philp Landscape Architects does to create beautiful and usable outdoor spaces. The included complete landscape design that extends the modern feel of the residential lofts and contributes to a busy, urban environment. The landscape incorporates a thoughtful mix of native and ornamental plants that will make the landscape interesting year-round while providing biodiversity and sustainability. We specified a variety of drought-tolerant plant species that included native ferns, flowering perennials, and shrubs that contribute to reduced upkeep, while enhancing local wildlife habitat. One challenge of the was the slope of the site. We created a series of terraced gardens, using locally-sourced basalt stone for all the retaining walls. In addition to stablizing the landscape, the terraces created levels that allowed us to separate planting areas from patios and provided living spaces that offer additional seating for residents to enjoy vistas of the city. Walkways and patios were installed with permeable pavers to add to the aesthetics of the landscape while helping to manage stormwater and assist groundwater recharge. We carefully worked within the landscape to install site-specific LED landscape lighting that designed to not only illuminate the lofts, but also offer safety to residents leveraging the outdoor landscape at night. The end product is a vibrant, inviting landscape that positively contributes to the architecture of Mosler Lofts. With a combination of seating and verdant planting, the residents have an outdoor oasis to enjoy while making this landscape a delightful respite in the heart of the city. Ultimately, the exceeded the client’s expectations and helped re-establish a high benchmark for landscape designs in urban public spaces like Mosler Lofts.
