Nestled on a 9.5-acre lot at the summit of Pikes Hill in Norway, Maine, this project embodies a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, tailored to meet the specific desires of its owners. The design aims to capture breathtaking distant mountain views and a glimpse of Lake Pennesseewassee while maintaining a modest footprint. The clients envisioned a warm retreat, perfectly suited for the cold Maine winters, complete with an indoor endless pool for daily exercise and a dedicated space to showcase their cherished collection of carved decoys. The architectural form of the home is almost crystalline, carefully reflecting the site's unique characteristics—views to the NNW, an approach from the ESE, and abundant southern sunlight. To ensure a cozy atmosphere, the design cleverly minimizes unnecessary spaces, scaling down rooms that require intimacy, such as the bedrooms, and limiting the height of the pool area. A deep, thin overhang at the southern corner provides essential shade while casting a dramatic shadow that enhances the entry porch's visual appeal. The entry foyer features an incrementally tapering staircase that draws the eye toward the main living area, which opens up to the stunning landscape through a ribbon of glass. This thoughtful design invites natural light while framing the picturesque views down the hill. The exterior showcases locally milled tongue-and-groove cedar, arranged in varying directions, with gaps at vertical and horizontal joints, contributing to the home's contemporary aesthetic. Craftsmanship is evident throughout, with a focus on high performance and sustainability. The residence operates efficiently with a single heat pump per floor, relying on a gas stove only for the coldest nights, perhaps after a refreshing swim in the pool. This project stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can create a functional yet stylish home that embraces its surroundings while catering to the lifestyle of its inhabitants.
