Nestled on a picturesque 2.8-acre wooded lot in Durham, NH, Spark Side is a striking Passive House that merges modern sustainability with traditional architectural forms. The clients envisioned a home that would not only be energy-efficient but also deeply connected to the surrounding landscape, where they and their dog, Vader, could enjoy the outdoors throughout the year. Respecting the remnants of a bygone farmstead, the design incorporates an old stone wall, creating a unique dialogue between the past and present. The architectural team meticulously crafted a fossil-fuel-free structure characterized by simple yet elegant lines, echoing the timelessness of farmhouse aesthetics while embracing state-of-the-art technologies. The layout is strategically designed to optimize solar gain, capturing sunlight from a direction that diverges from the primary drainage slope. This thoughtful orientation ensures maximum energy efficiency, aligning with the clients' desire for a net-zero energy home.
