Perched in a tranquil setting, the scope of work at this home was a total re-envisioning of the outdoor spaces to balance functionality and beauty. At the Bainbridge Residence, a beautifully constructed stone pathway winds through the plush, native plantings to create a seamless relationship from the home to the landscape. This native landscape is not only beautiful, but utilizes locally sourced basalt for the stonework and reclaimed cedar for the decking and construction materials, well improving the natural aesthetic and emphasizing sustainability. The plantation palette used a splendid assembly of plants selected for the Pacific Northwest, including ferns, rhododendrons, and ornamental grasses. These functional plants produce living outer space that maintains adequate visual interests throughout all four seasons while providing habitat both in the visual with insect and birds. The challenge of the was the existing topography of the site, which sloped steeply, is treated with terracing to design usable outdoor space without damaging natural drainage. Using terraced gardens was clever thinking on the Wittman Estes teams part and added to the textures and feel of the landscape. A water feature, complete with its cascading fountain, provides an active attraction for wildlife, including birds and insects. Additionally, the sound of water creates calmness and a subtle background noise in the garden area. Smart lighting in the garden allowed light to be subtly used outdoors to highlight the landscape at night and create the utility of enjoying the outdoors in the night time. The whole creation is a beautifully direct outdoor environment that relates and connects with the architectural styles of the Bainbridge Residence and, to support, promotes the enjoyment of outdoor living. The clients were thrilled and delighted with the end result, highlighting the detail, craftsmanship, and personal attention of Wittman Estes Landscape for creating a new outdoor sanctuary.
