About This Project

South Coast Historic Cottage CBA Landscape Architects, LLC completed the South Coast Historic Cottage which beautifully illustrates the combination of history with modern trends. Set in the beautiful coastal countryside of New England, this needed to take as much care as possible to add some character to the cottage whilst being mindful of its historic value. We made a few mistakes on the way, and indeed, our laid-out plan came up against reality, as there were also challenges on the way the ground was uneven, and we had to save the existing native flora. So, instead, we worked with this challenge and created a system of tiered terraces that looked both beautiful and could successfully drain. Designed to minimize upkeep using native plants, the landscaping is an exemplar of both common sense and local biodiversity. Seasonally changing colors from hardy perennials, ornamental grasses and flowering shrubs create a varied tapestry of color and ensure year round beauty. In selecting materials, we prioritized quality above all. We found walkways and retaining walls from a local quarry so it matched the classic architecture of the cottage. Handcrafted wooden pergola flanked with natural cedar fencing blend seamlessly with the landscape to create comfortable outdoor rooms to relax and entertain. Lighting was carefully incorporated in the landscape and was used primarily to accentuate the building itself along with creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in the areas after the sun has set. We have designed an innovative irrigation system that ensures we use water wisely but the gardens remain lush and vibrant. The end product is an artful mix of history and nature that leaves the owner smiling and clearly adds unique value to the property.
