A dated expanse of lawn became a pocket garden, an extension of home, or a garden retreatwhatever the homeowners wanted to call it, this landscape transformation delivered. It searched out the spirit of the place while confronting its total lack of intimacy. We worked on this in the heart of Winnetka and it puts our commitment to quality and detail on display for anyone in Bannockburn, Chicago, Deerfield, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Lake Forst, Lincolonshire, Long Grove, and Northbrook. The first stage of the involved the careful demolition of the old, deteriorated, non-strategic structural walls. We swapped them out with locally-sourced limestone based on its strength and classic look to have the garden outlive all of us by way of tying into the natural landscape that surrounds it. The new walls served to both stabilize the spaces and create a beautiful backdrop for the lush plantings inside the walls. We included different native plants that flourish in the climate where we work, such as purple hydrangea, lavender that smells amazing, and ornamental grasses that repopulate every year and file over the wind like hair. Never mind their beauty, these choices also supported indigenous wildlife and promoted biodiversity in the region. The landscape incorporated eco-friendly permeable pavers to allow drainage and curb runoff in a winding pathway which meandered through the grounds. Another challenge was the physicality of our plot, which is relatively sloped - we had to grade the earth, as well as mix it with sand to facilitate the drainage to ensure the plants thrive. With our dedicated folks working behind the scenes, they were able to overcome this challenge, making sure the terrain flowed seamlessly and created an inviting space. The result is a stunning walled garden sited as sanctuary providing privacy yet openness, ideal for leisurely and entertaining moments. The clients were pleased with how the performance and aesthetics worked together to give life to a garden that had once been unwanted.
