City Bouquet, Boston, MA CHRISTIE DUSTMAN & COMPANY INC. is excited to share our most recent construction "City Bouquet," created in Boston, MA. City Bouquet is an exciting and ambitious that involved the data collection and design of a limited urban area into an engaging floral experience that combines the excitement of city living and a design aesthetic that reflects the peace of the natural world. Our firm started this process with site analysis - which was challenging to do with the size restriction of the location and the existing concrete. Regardless, we were able to develop a design for the space that created a sense of "enclosure," maximizing the opportunity to make the site feel expansive both vertically and horizontally, while keeping access into the landscape for visitors a priority. The materials designed in the spatial and organizational features were considered; we focused on using high-quality plants that are both native to Boston and add to the local biodiversity. Working towards that design goal, we used hardy perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs, providing an eclectic visual tapestry of colors and textures. Our key materials included a natural stone path for easy access through the garden, sustainably sourced to comply with the intent of the design process, and an engineered wood “raised” bed designed on site to further enhance the visual appeal of the garden. In addition to creating a lasting impression of plant material, we produced a rain garden, designed to manage the seasonal/regional storm water effectively, showing our commitment to mitigation practices in the landscape process. In this interaction, we were able to produce a sustainable garden design that not only provided the visual pleasure of landscapes, but also provided a place for gathering residents and neighbors. Upon completion of the , the City Bouquet garden has become a community flagship - thriving on its installations for its beauty and community purpose - creating an ecology of place where city living and nature have aesthetic cohesion within a space that was previously uninspired.
