About This Project

Garden for Stones Kimberly Mercurio Landscape Architecture is excited to announce 'Garden for Stones,' a unique landscape that beautifully combines art and nature. Located in Newtonville, a densely populated neighborhood, the garden built on a detailed plan features a layered approach that emphasizes the qualities associated with stone while integrating low maintenance, a diverse plant palette, and a lush landscape. The benefitted from a stunning collection of granite boulders that were locally sourced from existing sites. The stones serve as natural seating and walking areas for visitors to explore throughout the garden. A complete range of native and perennial plantings were chosen to complement the stone and include robust flowering shrubs and ornamental grasses to provide color, texture, and wildlife habitat. The landscape design faced a topography challenge in having a site with varied elevations; but our design created tiered planting beds that created depth and dimension while offering proper drainage and limiting erosion. The walks were finished with permeable pavers to allow rainwater to infiltrate the soil supporting the plantings below without leaving a muddy walk or dirt piles. In the end, the landscape provided guests with a peaceful retreat via a curated rock garden, a bubbling water source, and seasonally blooming plants providing interest throughout the year. The client was delighted with how the hardscapes were engaged with the softscapes to create a calm space to sit, relax, and bring people to nature.
