About This Project

Cape Cod Style Cottage Residence This Cape Cod Style Cottage residence in Los Angeles was designed by MLM LANDSCAPE DESIGN, L.L.C. under the direction of Merri Lee Marks, and is a perfect example of combining coastal charm and exquisite landscaping. Together, we were able to transform the outdoor space into a tranquil escape consistent with the classic New England aesthetic. The utilized a variety of native plants, including hydrangeas, lavender, and ornamental grasses, which were chosen specifically for their drought-resistance and their color. Weathered cedar fencing and natural stone paths were included, providing a rustic feel to navigate through lush garden beds and inviting seating areas. One challenge we faced was the sloping grades of the property. Grading the landscape to create tier levels in the gardens improved functionality and visual. Adding an irrigation system was included as a sustainable step while preserving water efficiency - especially necessary in Los Angeles. The end result created a cohesive landscape that matched the Cape Code architecture. The sitting area around the fire pit, featuring hand-selected boulders, provided a cozy gathering space for the evenings. The client was pleasantly surprised by the transformation, focusing on the attention to detail and quality of the build. The not only created a positive external presence to the home, but also supports the creation of external living space that reflects the spirit of a coastal retreat in downtown Los Angeles.
