About This Project

Craftsman Cottage in Korea Town Completed by MLM Landscape Design, L.L.C., under the guidance of Merri Lee Marks, the 'Craftsman Cottage in Korea Town' demonstrates intentionality in design and execution. Located in central Los Angeles, this took a small outdoor area and created a garden that compliments the traditional Craftsman style of the cottage. The design is a thoughtful mix of California native plants, appropriate materials, and handmade stone paths that take visitors through a vibrant landscape. We chose careful mixes of ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and drought tolerant herbs to provide seasonal visual interest while also creating positive environments for insects, birds, and other beneficial wildlife. Our team embraced the challenge of slope by designing terraced planting beds which provide more visual interest while also improving water drainage and soil stability. We designed the outdoor living area with the perfect place to sit by introducing handmade wooden bench seating and a pergola covered in climbing vines to provide the perfect shade for relaxing. Reclaimed wood and locally sourced stone ultimately enhanced our goal toward sustainability while providing aesthetic outcomes true to the craftsman style of the cottage. In the end, we created beautiful garden and landscape that delights our client and the community and improves on beauty and function. Through quality craftsmanship and thoughtful attention to detail, it's easy to see how 'Craftsman Cottage in Korea Town' is a benchmark of resumed productivity and inspiring design in landscape architecture.
