Cardiff Floating Stairs Images: Cardiff Floating Stairs Carson Douglas Landscape Architecture Completed in 2009, the Cardiff Floating Stairs is an exceptionally designed minimalist piece balancing function and beauty. This sits in the beautiful Cardiff area and includes a stunning staircase over lovely landscaping where the outdoor living spaces and nature transition beautifully. Weather-resistant hardwood used for the stair treads also makes the design last longer with its presence while blending organically with the hardscape of the landscape. Support and retaining walls feature locally sourced stone to tie the staircase into the natural topography, creating stability while adding visual appeal. The steep slope of the site was one of the challenges that the had to overcome, ensuring safe and functional engineering. The team managed these challenges with curation and fantastic cantilevered design solutions to create a staircase that is ingrained in functionality but also a sculptural form in the landscape. A mix of local drought-tolerant plants frame the stairs and offer a palette that gives color every season, while consuming little water. For those with outdoor stairs leading down from an upper deck or patio, lighting up the stairs not only makes them safer but also makes them a little more magical in the evenings. The end result is a stunning landscape that has delighted the client, and created a peaceful retreat.
