The East Hill Retro Mid Century Kitchen project in Pensacola, FL, transformed a dated kitchen into a vibrant and functional space that beautifully balances sleek modernity with colorful retro charm. The design challenge was to create a harmonious environment that satisfied both homeowners' distinct tastes—one favoring a contemporary aesthetic while the other leaned toward a kitschy, colorful palette. The solution involved an innovative melding of design elements, achieving a stylish, cohesive look that reflects their personalities. Darker stained walnut cabinets were strategically selected to ground the design, providing a rich contrast against the bold eggplant wall paint. This choice not only enhanced the kitchen's depth but also served as a counterbalance to the lively hues, creating a sophisticated backdrop for the space. The countertops were crafted from Blizzard Caesarstone, introducing a striking white surface that contrasts beautifully with the dark cabinetry, while the iridescent white porcelain backsplash, cut into large squares, adds a modern texture and visual intrigue. To maintain budgetary constraints, the project team explored cost-effective alternatives, opting for laminated metal for the legs of the cooking island rather than stainless steel, which contributed to a clean, modern look without compromising on style. The layout was thoughtfully designed to maximize functionality, incorporating a refrigerator, oven/microwave, and two pantries—one large with pullouts for easy access, and a shallower one for additional dishware and pantry items. The glass in the pantry doors echoes the cubist glass design of the front door, while the retro-style handles tie the entire kitchen together, enhancing its mid-century appeal. The result is a small kitchen that exudes a powerful presence, where the homeowners can now enjoy cooking in a space that reflects their unique tastes, all while fostering a sense of harmony in their home.
