About This Project

Title: In The Nursery Creator: Barrels & Branches In Cardiff By The Sea, the coastal city of located on the North County coast, Barrels & Branches completed a a programming that was little more than a time capsule called 'In The Nursery' as it works to mold a placid hideaway among its natural habitat. Meticulous design, integrating modern landscaping methodologies to ensure native species thrive on a green and sustainable basis. At the heart of the is an absolutely beautiful selection of plants that can withstand drought, that have been carefully selected to flourish in the local climate. We selected a combination of colorful succulents, grasses and aromatic flowering plants that thrive in coastal environments and provide habitat for local pollinators. We also devised a unique drip irrigation system as part of the farm to save water while facilitating the growth of the plants both these elements help in ensuring the living system is maintained with minimal maintenance. One of our main difficulties was that the uneven surface needed a lot of grading and soil amending to provide a flat bed from which to plant. To solve this challenge, our talented design and build team addressed the instability of the hillside while creating an additional visual element in the landscape with natural stone terracing. Locally sourced flagstone pathways link the different parts of the garden and promote exploration and access. Finally, among the plantings and pathways, we included a few handmade wooden raised garden beds, built out of reclaimed wood, that complete the picture with their rustic appeal. These beds are perfect for the clients wishes to grow many different variety of herbs and vegetables and also highlight this sustainable gardening approach. The outcome of 'In The Nursery' is a perfect cocktail of elegance and ecological awareness. Seating areas are dotted around to allow for relaxation and contemplation, creating a calm space that allows for reflection on all the greenery around. The transformation delighted our clients, who commented that the completed enriched their outdoor living and integrated seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape.
