This popular winter vegetable is hardy and easy to grow. Named after Queen Victoria, this variety has stems that grow up to 36" in length and has a tart flavor.
Rhubarb is a perennial. Select sunny location, cultivate, and fertilize soil with vegetable food. Plant in early spring as soon as soil can be worked. Sow seed sparingly, firming soil over row. It is a heavy feeder, and you should work compost and manure into the soil for the best results as well as fertilizer. Water lightly and regularly. Protect from pests. Do not harvest stalks the first year. Start harvesting the second year. Do not eat the leaves, they are poisonous.
