To maximize hatch rates, avoid keeping the container closed while waiting for mummies to hatch. Release Ervipar weekly at low rates as aphids appear. For established aphid colonies, consider localized hotspot treatments or use a compatible insecticide at the economic threshold. If aphids may transmit a virus or if populations are high, use a compatible chemical before releasing Ervipar. Avoid spraying between the release of adults and mummy formation.

Description

Aphidius ervi is a beneficial parasitic wasp used for controlling aphid populations in crops. The instructions for using Aphidius ervi are quite detailed to ensure its effectiveness. It's important not to keep the container closed while waiting for mummies to hatch, as this could reduce hatch rates. The release should be done weekly at low rates as soon as aphids begin to appear in the crop.

For established aphid colonies, localized hotspot treatments or intervention at the economic threshold with a compatible insecticide may be necessary. If aphids are suspected of transmitting a virus or if populations are high, using a compatible chemical control before releasing Aphidius ervi is recommended. It's crucial not to spray between the release of adults and mummy formation to avoid harming the developing parasitic wasps.

To release the adults, the bottle should be opened in the greenhouse and walked around the area to be treated, with the bottle held at a 45º angle to release the emerged adults into the air. It's important to distribute the adults evenly over the area for effective control. The bottle should then be recapped and stored at greenhouse temperature until more adults have hatched. This process should be repeated daily for 2-4 days until most adults have emerged from the bottle. Alternatively, the vial can be tied so it hangs among the leaves, allowing the remaining parasites to escape over 3-4 days as they emerge from the mummies.

Introductions of Aphidius ervi are best done early in the day or late afternoon/early evening. Additionally, Aphidius ervi can also be reared on banker plants for continuous control. Storage and transport of Aphidius ervi should be done in a way that keeps them out of direct sunlight and at a temperature between 43-50°F to maintain their effectiveness. The product should be used within 18 hours of receipt to ensure its potency.
