Bugleweed, ajuga, is a ground cover perennial that is highly valued by many gardeners, not just for its practical features, but also for its very beautiful leaves and flowers. This rapidly spreading plant is a low-density grower and ideal for filling voids in the garden, slopes to prevent erosion, or may be used as ground cover.
Unlike so many other ground covers, Ajuga is evergreen with attractive dark green glossy leaves and sprays of blue/purple (even pink) flowers through spring to early summer. In addition to axis-scraping good looks, Ajuga is also a tough little plant — putting up with difficult shady corners of the garden no grass will tread on and requiring virtually no maintenance once established. Therefore, if you’re a new gardener looking for something pretty easy-going or already an established hand in the garden and want to add some more variety without compromising on beauty, Ajuga is a safe bet!

The easy-grow, free-flowering Ajuga has shade tolerance and deer resistance, making it terrific for dressing up the landscape as a groundcover under trees where its colorful leaves can shine without competing with tree roots for moisture.
Seeds of Ajuga germinate in 14 to 21 days at room temperature. Keep them exposed to light and don't cover them, as that can inhibit germination.
Ajuga likes shade to part sun, especially in hot areas. It tolerates morning sun, but too much direct midday or afternoon sun—especially in warm regions—can scorch or bleach the leaves.

Ajuga is usually considered safe for pets, but you should always consult your vet if you know that your pets are culinary herbalists.
Ajuga doesn’t require mowing. Occasionally, you can trim or thin it if it becomes ratty, cutting out old flower spikes to keep it neat.
