This comprehensive redesign exemplifies the plan of a multi-tiered environment that is integrated into its adjacent hillside terrain, thus enhancing the property’s exquisite views of the surrounding countryside and promoting sustainable practices in the home environment. Our company was faced with the problems presented by steep inclines and rocky surfaces, which required inventive engineering practices and a diversity of high quality materials to ensure that the garden was both stable and visually acceptable. The use of native, site derived stone for its retaining walls not only answered all structural anxieties but also uplifted the visual plane with a naturally rugged appearance. It was also requested that a diversity of low maintenance drought tolerant native plants be utilized i.e. California poppy, succulents, etc. Again, illustrates our dedication to sustainable practices and to a low maintenance environment. In addition, a custom irrigation system was engineered to conserve, and distribute the famed water of our Los Angeles region, while promoting plant growth, which is necessary in this dry climate. The laying of elegant pathways through the garden in the form of permeable paving allows for easy accessibility and provides paths through the diversity of the garden flora. The highlight of the Hillside Garden is its spectacular terraced herb/vegetable garden developed to enlighten the client’s interests in homegrown produce. Surrounded by lush lavender and rosemary specimens this space satisfies the need for productive sustenance as well as enhances the sensory rich habitat so desired in a warm garden.
