Vegetable Garden by Burke Brothers Landscape Design/Build Burke Brothers Landscape Design/Build is excited to share the 'Vegetable Garden' . This fun new happened at a family residence in the heart of our service area - Abington, Ambler, and surrounding areas. The challenge of this was to create a vegetable garden in a sunny area of the back yard, emphasizing quality construction practices, and sustainable gardening. The main design features several raised cedar beds that are aesthetically pleasing, and durably built, that provide excellent drainage and aeration to the soil. Each bed is oriented in a manner to promote sunlight throughout the day to encourage varied crop types, seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and greens, to grow vigorously. We used a drip irrigation system to water the crops while reducing water waste, even in mid-summer when water use can increase. There were some site challenges, mostly the uneven ground of the yard. The Burke Brothers team is excellent at modifying grades to create a garden design that is attractive and functional. We modified the grade areas of the yard and terraced the entire middle section of the garden space. Our gardener also placed the natural stone paths between the beds to facilitate easy access to care for the plants, while still adding a rustic charm to the garden. We added additional flowers to the borders of the garden to support pollinators and attract butterflies and bees, which help with the health of the vegetable plants' ecosystem. In the end, our simple design combined well together to create an incredibly functional vegetable garden for the family, and at the same time, an area of relaxation. The client loved what we created, which provided both usable space in the garden and incredible features of beauty.
