The Visiting Faculty Residence, a remarkable project nestled in New Orleans, stands as a tribute to the architectural vision of a beloved professor who bequeathed his home to Tulane University. This residence, characterized by its heavy-gauge steel and corrugated metal, embodies a blend of modern aesthetics and vernacular simplicity in the form of a vertical shotgun house. The design promotes an open floor plan, with a central core that integrates vital support spaces, including a bathroom, library, storage, stairway, water heater, and HVAC system. This core is not merely functional; it serves as the structural spine of the house, extending from the first floor to the lofted study area, creating a seamless flow of space and light. The recent renovation of the bathroom exemplifies the project's commitment to enhancing both functionality and design. Originally a work in progress, the bathroom was transformed while carefully preserving its essential components: the shower, HVAC closet, and toilet were retained in their original locations. However, every finish was thoughtfully updated, with the existing clay red floor tile left intact to maintain a sense of continuity throughout the residence. A finished ceiling was introduced, allowing for the extension of HVAC ducts to improve air circulation and illuminate the space with additional lighting. Innovative design choices included the installation of pocket doors at both ends of the bathroom to enhance privacy, and the enclosure of the HVAC niche with custom cabinet panels. This feature not only conceals the utility aspects but also integrates a sleek shower door pull that doubles as a towel bar, harmonizing the aesthetic elements throughout the space. The craftsmanship evident in these renovations reflects a dedication to both modern comfort and the original architectural ethos, resulting in a refined, inviting environment for visiting faculty that honors the legacy of its creat.
