Eclectic Courtyard Connection The Eclectic Courtyard Connection was designed and completed by Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture. The aim of this was to take a neglected outdoor area and turn it into an exciting location for gathering and community. Located in the center of San Luis Obispo, CA, this embodies a cool, modern, enjoyable, and relaxed, oasis in the beautiful coastal region of Central California. The courtyard contains a beautiful mosaic of drought-tolerant perennials, native grasses, and contemporary hardscape surfaces to encourage exploring the space and relaxing. The firm used locally-sourced stone and reclaimed wood, creating a sustainable that highlighted the rustic qualities of the area. The arrangement of the courtyard included a winding pathway lined with aromatic herbs and perennial succulents providing an all-senses experience when entering the outdoor space. One of the unique challenges was the management of the uneven grade of the site, compounded by the creation of the proper drainage for the area. Our skilled design and construction staff were successful in leveling the area for sustainable drainage, whilst implementing a bioretention building that filtered rain water before discharging to the city drainage. The final result is a very cohesive outdoor space that supports community gatherings and personal reflection, with inviting seating areas, as well as ambient lighting that encourages continued use after sunset. The client was excited the transformation of the space and saw the Eclectic Courtyard Connection providing not only an outdoor social space for gatherings but the personal retreat they needed. This extends our commitment to creating quality landscapes and innovative construction in the environmentally conscious landscapes of Atascadero, Avila Beach, and beyond.
