Santa Barbara Modern Ranch Set against the grandeur of California's coastline, the Santa Barbara Modern Ranch represents the perfect melding of contemporary aesthetics and the natural milieu, realized by Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture. This undertaking involved the reimagining of an extensive property into a neat, clustered refuge which scanned seamlessly with its surrounding landscape. The landscape design is highlighted by layers of native, drought resistant plants arranged in various heights, textures, and colors which are conducive to the local climate. The use of ornamental grasses, succulents, and colorful flowering shrubs enliven the site, while the design helps ensure that there is color and variation throughout the year. The paths and retaining walls constructed of local stone further anchor the home to the wild nature found in Santa Barbara. One of the most challenging aspects of the property was the unevenness of the grade an amount of an access to usable outdoor space. In addition to an urgency to build multi-tiered gardens, outdoor living elements are designed to maximize usability and beauty. In addition to the tiered garden areas, there is a welcoming outdoor fire pit and seating design which creates a cozy gathering area for the family to support sunset views as a family seating area. When designing the , sustainable practices were a priority. Efficient irrigation is an effective means for the property owner to have a lively landscape, whilst practicing water conservation. The result of this is a low-maintenance garden that invites wildlife while creating an environmentally responsible retreat for the owners. The final outcome was received very well by the clients who can now enjoy an exquisitely designed backyard landscape that mirrors their lifestyle and values.
