The Larissa Drive Drought Tolerant Garden in the heart of Los Angeles is an extension of our incredible work that exemplifies innovative design and ecological awareness. This posed its own unique challenges, primarily to create a vibrant garden in an area that will most likely have continuous drought, informing its water adjusted design. Our foresight in this consciousness involved thoughtful and direct landscape design, using a large variety of native California plants, California poppies, a variety of types of lavenders and assorted succulents. Each piqued, for their durability and low maintenance once settled in and established. Also used were organic soil amendments, to help retain water retention, establish healthy growth, and to ensure that the garden not just survived, rather thrived in its new environment. We also made sure to incorporate hardscapes, for the use of functionality as well as aesthetic qualities. For pedestrian paths, it was important to use permeable pavers that promoted rainwater infiltration. With good grey-washed rustic boulders, we also provided natural seating areas, giving various uses in space. The use of a drip irrigation system for watering would also allow water to be used effectively, directly watering roots while maximizing the least amount of water possible. Later, as a wonderful , the skilled team came up with the planning on a previously underutilized yard and transformed it into a beautiful garden oasis. We carefully planned and made adaptations as there were issues with existing slope topography and varied types of soil. The garden is now a beautiful combination of color, texture, and form; in essence, a garden escape without leaving home. With that, we are pleased to have created this garden to support local wildlife biota and provide a refuge for pollinators and beneficial insects.
