About This Project

The Feed Store Restaurant & Park Delivered by W Garett Carlson, ASLA, 'The Feed Store Restaurant & Park', represents a complete transformation of a barren site that is now a unique and lively restaurant space nestled in a public park-like atmosphere. Located in the midst of Los Angeles, this provides the community with a lush oasis in the city. The design uses a framework of native and drought-tolerant plants which are ideal for the long-term sustainability of the local environment. Organic material was selected for use within the , especially river rock and reclaimed wood, and utilized for planters, under seating, and as surface area in and around paved walkways and patio areas that provide surfaces to socialize as well. During the design and construction process the team faced unique problem solving exercises such as the incorporation of the existing topography and maintenance of a customer friendly drainage solution. Creative grading solutions were introduced that managed surface water runoff and eliminated standing puddles around steep grades. Rain gardens were designed and implemented into the layout to slow the flow of water into the adjacent street. The design also showcases a diverse palette of ornamental grasses and flowering shrubs providing habitat for local pollinators in addition to visual intrigue for patrons visiting the park. The outdoor dining area is a framed series of patio spaces that provide a secluded atmosphere with visual walls of lush vegetation, soft lighting, and supporting sounds of local birds in the background, which creates an ongoing experience to dine al fresco. The end result is an attractive combination of nature and urban dining that provides great satisfaction to the client, dining customers, and those that visit 'The Feed Store Restaurant & Park' to admire it. It represents total execution of W Garett Carlson's quality and artistry in spatial landscaping, creating an attractive experience contributing to the environment, the surrounding community, and the restaurant experience while dining engulfs the patron.
