The Boulder House Situated in the heart of Bel Air, 'The Boulder House' is a remarkable landscape transformation led by W Garett Carlson, ASLA, an expert in outdoor spaces. This successfully blends the natural landscape and modern design, with elements showing the harmony of boulders, native plants, and lush vegetation representing the beauty of Southern California. The focal point of this landscape is a well-designed stone path that meanders through the property, accented by specifically placed boulders to evoke the hillside next to the house. Each boulder is handpicked for its own texture and color, adding beauty, and becoming natural sculptures which give the landscape form. W Garett Carlson created an array of colors and textures with drought-tolerant native plants that would be healthy and can thrive in this climate. The carefully chosen plants help the landscape achieve sustainability, while providing a team for our local pollinators. With the use permeable pavers in the patio space helped with water drainage while providing a beautiful design that would work with some expected stormwater concerns. One of the large obstacles on this was the elevation of the site. The team designed tiered gardens that allowed conflict of the elevation to relent, giving the property a visually cohesive flow. This also created microclimates for many of the plants in the beds to thrive together. The final landscape of this is stunning, whilst functioning on a level which should provide delight for the client, while providing a dramatic addition to The Boulder House as well. Each detail provided was based in notions bringing peaceful aspects with the fountain, the colors of the plantings for each season, and high-level execution.
