About This Project

Rooftop Garden in Skyline Village Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Skyline Village Rooftop Garden, a landscape completed by W Garett Carlson, ASLA, is a complete reimagining of outdoor space in an urban environment. Designed for residents in Bel Air, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica, our design team carefully crafted this rooftop escape to be an oasis amidst the skyline. Using quality materials that emphasize sustainability, we selected a variety of drought-tolerant plants that flourish in the Los Angeles climate that would offer a good color spectrum throughout the year while minimizing water use. Robotically planted in the garden, we chose mixed native grasses, fragrant herbs, and perennial flowering plants to create a layered aesthetic that is pleasing to the eye and helps pull in pollinators. One of the most important challenges of this was incorporating structural elements of the landscape design while avoiding the weight limitations of the rooftop. As a solution, we introduced soil alternatives that are not only lighter but also functional soil mediums and modular planting systems that are introduced and maintained to help create a rich habitat for plant growth, while allowing the structure of the building to remain intact. We created a tailored irrigation system that uses rainwater harvesting, which will also be helpful for future maintenance issues. The overall result is a stunning rooftop with sweeping views of the skyline, an inviting atmosphere with seating areas, and an elegant presence. They can now have a place to get away and experience isolated social opportunities, reinforcing our belief that living urban living shouldn't forfeit access to the natural environment.
