California Coastal Retreat Completed by: Nick Martin Landscape Architect Inc. Located on the beautiful Southern California coast, the 'California Coastal Retreat' is a perfect example of creativity, artistry, and craftsmanship by Nick Martin Landscape Architect Inc. Our design team served the various communities from Escondido to Oceanside when transforming a challenging hillside site into a beautiful outdoor space that blends naturally into the surrounding landscape. The intent of the was to combine native plantings with sustainable hardscapes that would help the client create outdoor spaces to enjoy with friends and family. The design team carefully selected drought tolerant plant material such as nighttime succulents and native grasses to compose a plant palette that thrives in the coastal climate and integrates with the ecological characteristics of the property. The landscape designers configured undulating pathways made or a locally sourced decomposed granite for ease of access and minimal disruptions to the site. One of the prominent challenges of the was working on a very steep site while controlling erosion. We introduced terrace sections in the hillside and plentiful large boulders that helped control soil erosion but also supported an organic look and feel. The design team made sure to include a custom wooden pergola that supports climbing vines and provide seating for hanging out and outdoor dining which became a central element against the background of stunning views of the ocean. The outcome is a beautiful balance of functional, aesthetic, and sustainable landscape. The use of natural materials such as reclaimed wood and stone ensures longevity while respecting the coastline. The client was extremely pleased with the transformation to the property, and commented that the retreat is now their favorite gathering space where they interact between living indoors and outdoors. This exemplifies not just quality, craftsmanship, but also one of our goals of creating landscapes that enhance the beautiful landscapes of Southern California.
