About This Project

Small s / Sallie Hill Design, Landscape Architect is pleased to announce 'Small s / ', an initiative we created to elevate outdoor spaces with thoughtfulness and appreciation for small . Our work serves various communities, including Bedford, Belmont, Weston, and we started this specific to address the we feel are often neglected and could enhance a garden experience into a more personal outdoor retreat. This focused on improving the few garden landscapes at residential home sites sustainably, and the effort began to incorporate native plantings into the garden designs, formally detailing the garden beds and using native plantings as identifiers at numerous locations in Bedford and Weston. Another key component of sustaining the landscape was using local stone for the path work. Using stone from nearby quarries not only allowed the stonework to maintain a connection to the home, but it also provided a competent, durable material for ease of use and maintenance. We built custom, raised garden beds from reclaimed lumber and expanded the gardening area, while supporting the rustic charm of the home. We experienced challenges of varying topography at each location when working within the gardens, and we developed creative grading and drainage methods that allowed the water to flow naturally through the gardens, eliminating erosion while supporting healthy plant growth. The installed decorative boulders and natural light at several locations provided beauty and function. The outcome yielded a very satisfied client who loved their outdoor spaces and would entertain in the gardens throughout all four seasons. Loose designs to cozy sitting areas around the perennial garden cover, or bright seasonal color within the invited them to enjoy their gardens. All of the displayed how very simple an improvement could offer extraordinary results, ultimately providing amazing spaces to appreciate their customized gardens, which reflect their individual personalities and lifestyles.
