Background: Small Backyard Retreat by Dr. Dan's Landscaping & Architectural Design Based in Virginia Beach, 'Small Backyard Retreat' reflects Dr. Dan's Landscaping & Architectural Design’s dedication to developing ordinary outdoor areas into exceptional backyard spaces. This presented the challenge of providing a tranquil oasis within a compact backyard that met a variety of design and use requirements. After conducting a thorough site analysis to address the family's desired lifestyle, we suggested native plant materials that will provide long-lasting color, enhance ecological diversity and function well in this undertaking. The combination of flowering shrubs and ornamental grasses, will embrace the area with colorful color in both textures and color in all seasons. The highlights the installation of a custom stone patio made from durable bluestone which was sourced locally. This material provides both beauty and durability when considering the patio being on a sloped surface. We also incorporated a fire pit around which seating will be used for gatherings with friends and family on cooler evenings. Because of the sloped properties of the renovation, the team took creative grading considerations into account while removing sod and physically altering the landscape of the backyard. This process created further tiered levels which provided efficient movement from the house to the garden and was an attractive element of the landscape. The design included a hidden draining system to absorb excess rainwater so that the native plant material and hardscape would not decay or salinate. The result is to strike a remarkable balance between nature and design. The creation of soft landscaping lighting and a carefully designed aggregate path invites guests to relax and enjoy one’s surrounding. The client was enthusiastic to enjoy their new outdoor retreat and stated that it exceeded their expectations.
