We took an ordinary back yard and created a California style retreat; blending modern design with nature in the heart of Michigan. The started with a detailed consult to ensure that we fully understood the end customer vision, a peaceful yet functional outdoor retreat. The steep ungraded site posed one of our greatest challenges, which we tackled through tiered landscaping. Not only did that make it more accessible, it gave it some eye candy. We have used natural stone for the retaining walls and pathways, high-quality material that is long replacing distinct man-made objects, which helps them blend into the environment we are in. The 's defining element is the large patio area, built with high-quality warm-earth toned pavers that exudes a California sun- drenched feel. Designed to entertain with a built-in fire pit, a perfect spot to gather with family and friends around a warm fire. The patio is bordered by drought-tolerant landscaping and native plants that are designed to be both beautiful and sustainable. How to water lots of grass without wasting water was both a challenge and a goal we aimed for with the irrigation system. This high tech irrigation system is smart enough to adjust itself based on the local weather, thus ensuring the landscape will flourish with no wastage. The end product was one that the client is beaming with joy and has the perfect combination of style and utility, that provides a calm escape into nature.
